Former Rockstar Dev Predicts GTA VI Won't Be Wildly Different From GTA 5
Obbe Vermeij, who worked for Rockstar Games on GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV warns fans not to expect too much in Grand Theft Auto VI or risk being disappointed.
In an interview with SanInPlay, a popular YouTube channel from Brazil, Obbe was asked about his thoughts on GTA VI. While he makes some valid points, it's important to note he hasn't worked for Rockstar Games since 2009 and clarifies he has "no inside information" about the development of GTA VI.
"It gonna be the best game out there"
Vermeij admits he's very impressed with what we've seen so far, particularly the beach scene where each individual has a unique animation.
“I love the Miami vibe. The scene that blows me away is the one on the beach where everybody seems to be doing something else, every character has got his own animation. I think that looks pretty amazing... It’s going to be a good game.”
However he warns fans not to expect anything hugely different to what we've seen in GTA V.
"I don't think it's going to be wildly different from GTA 5, I think maybe people might be a little disappointed on the first day, but it's still gonna be the best game out there."
Who is Obbe Vermeij?
Obbe worked as a technical director at Rockstar Games throughout the development of GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 4, leaving the company in 2009.
He played a large role in programming many of the features in the 3D GTA games and has often discussed behind-the-scenes development stories on his Twitter, such as how he made the moon change size when shooting it with a sniper rifle. He also ran a blog where he discussed other development secrets, however following contact from his former colleagues at Rockstar, he opted to take it down.
The artists gave me a texture for the moon in gta3. I placed the moon in the sky, made sure it was visible at night and that it was a reasonable size. A few days later 4 artists were at my desk asking me to change the size of the moon. 'No problem' I said.
It turned out they couldn't decide what the size of the moon should be. Two of them wanted it smaller to be more realistic. The other two wanted it larger to be more cinematic.
This went on a bit and I suggested to make the size of the moon changeable in the game. This way they could decide in their own time and let me know the conclusion. Since I was working on the sniper rifle, I made it so that the moon toggled through 3 sizes (small, medium, large) as the player sniped it.
The artists never got back to me so I just left it in. It was still there in SA.

Remember - Keep Your Expectations In Check!
Although the hype for the next Grand Theft Auto game is off the scale, it sounds like we'd be wise not to expect a huge difference, particularly in the gameplay. Many fans - myself included - would be more than happy with a new story, new characters and some new gameplay mechanics, improving on what we've previously seen in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
